News of a series event surrounding a possible mine exploitation of an area that is almost the edger to the natural reserve of Diamond Lagoon. Canadian mine Tenke and its Argentinean subsidiary, Depromin, announced in February (2005) their decision to exploit the denominated area of Papagayos to extract porphyry sediment of gold and copper. This incident gives rise to strong oppositions from professionals, residents and government of San Carlos, Mendoza in defense of the water reserve.

"NO to the mine" Neighbours assaulted during the Chilecito anniversary
Self-convened neighbours against the mine in Chilecito, in La Rioja, were assaulted by provincial police and by starting politicians allied with governor Ángel Maza, when they were demonstrating against the mining exploitation in Famatina. This occurred during the celebrations of the 292 years of Chilecito city.

At the explicit request by communities, a meeting was held in this city on July 7th among province and national officers, including the Bishopric of Humahuaca, with the aim of integrating a group that controls compliance of an Integral Remediation Plan of environmental assets, that is, the cleansing of the zone from waste generated by mining activity.

Within a few days two similar pieces of news were published: the spillages of Mining Alumbrera (multinational located in Catamarca) and the poisoning of dozens of workers in Botnia (a Finnish pulp and paper enterprise, set up in Fray Bentos, Uruguay). Beyond those so-called "accidents" the facts demonstrated, in case it were necessary, the contaminating effect of these enterprises and, even more, a model of underdevelopment, which generates unemployment, impoverishment and death, unless it is stopped, as in the case of Esquel and La Rioja, due to actions started by the local communities.
