Up until the middle of the twentieth century, subterranean mining was the most common method for extracting deposits. After the Second World War, technological advances and the development of excavators and larger lorries allowed the transport of enormous quantities of materials which in turn encouraged open-pit mining. However, subterranean mines do still exist, such as those at El Teniente in Chile, the world's largest subterranean mine.
Generally subterranean mining has a lower environmental impact than open-pit mining. It has a fewer repercussions on the terrain, but it can cause contamination via the acids and metals employed and can block underground water reserves. Currently, more than 60% of the materials mined in the world come from surface mining, devastating rich ecosystems where the mine is located, provoking deforestation, contaminating the air, the soil, and water resources. |
