The huge profits are for the mining companies and not for the communities that live where the mineral resources are found. As a result of mining, communities that previously depended upon natural resources suffer immediate losses such as large reductions of jobs in agriculture, livestock, tourism and fishing.
And neither is mining a sustainable source of employment. When the mineral deposits are exhausted, the jobs disappear. The majority of projects have duration lasting from 10 to 40 years, after which the mining companies move out leaving behind death, contamination and devastation.
